Using Electronic Muscle Stimulation to Tone the Abs

Products that use electronic muscle stimulation or EMS for short have become hugely popular in recent years with people who were slightly overweight or who wanted a six pack abs stomach. The main attraction of using such a product is losing weight and toning the stomach area simply by wearing a set of pads or a belt.

This is a great idea in theory but for many people who buy these products they are a novelty that quickly wears off. While the underlying reasons why many feel the needs to buy these products in the first place remains.

Electronic muscle stimulation works by mimicking muscle contraction and this is caused by delivering electric impulses to the muscles. The impulses are generated by an electronic device and delivered through terminals or electrodes to the skin in direct on the muscles to be stimulated.

There is no doubt that this method does work to a degree although for the serious athlete or bodybuilder these impulses can be compared to a weak muscle contraction. These products can be beneficial for rehabilitation purposes such as when athletes are recovering from injury and are unable to undergo full training.

In the time it takes to set up one of these products, the average person could easily perform several sets of exercises on the living room floor which would probably provide far better results.

Many people have made the mistake of assuming that electronic muscle stimulation will give them the body of their dreams while sat on the sofa watching their favourite television show but such thinking exaggerates the effectiveness of these products.

Products like abs toning belts that use electronic muscle stimulation may well assist a fitness training program and a healthy eating regime but used on their own will probably not meet peoples expectations.
